Pharmaceutical Medicine is a medical specialty that focuses on the process of drug development from discovery to post-marketing for the benefit of patients and the health of society. The International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Pharmaceutical Medicine (IFAPP) was founded in 1975. Since its founding in 1975, the International Federation of Associations of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Pharmaceutical Medicine (IFAPP) has been working to promote and enlighten the field of pharmaceutical medicine through its branches. In Japan, the Japanese Association of Pharmaceutical Medicine (JAPhMed) has been working together with IFAPP since its founding as the Japanese branch of IFAPP.
Reflecting the changes and diversification of medical needs in recent years, various industries have entered the field of new drug development one after another, and therapeutic strategies using ICT such as combinations with medical devices, regenerative medicine, applications, and virtual reality are booming. In addition, there is a movement to promote the participation of patients and citizens at each stage from development to post-marketing, with the expectation of patient-centered drug development, and the provision of educational and training opportunities for these new players is of utmost importance for the promotion and awareness of pharmaceutical medicine.
Education and training are essential for the development of professionals in pharmaceutical medicine, and IFAPP, led by its Education Council, has taken the lead in establishing syllabi and curricula necessary for the standardization of education systems in various countries. The PharmaTrain project, which was created as an IMI project in the EU, has led to the standardization of pharmaceutical medical education courses in the EU and other countries.
In Japan, a course on pharmaceutical medicine co-organized by Osaka University and the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Medicine has received international accreditation.
In August 2020, we will offer online education in pharmaceutical medicine as part of our competency assessment-based human resource development (D-course) program.
